SculpSure Q and A

What is SculpSure?

Harnessing the power of laser light energy, SculpSure is the first laser treatment for noninvasive body fat removal cleared by the Food and Drug Administration. Fat accumulations in several places on body can be safely treated by the SculpSure system in 25-minute treatment sessions that need no time for recovery.

The SculpSure system has multiple applicators that can be made into different configurations, so a large area, such as the abdomen, or a couple smaller areas can be treated simultaneously. The treatment disrupts about one-quarter of the fat cells located in treatment areas, all without penetrating the skin. The cooling technology and targeted laser light ensures minimal impact on your skin’s surface.

How does SculpSure work?

The nature of laser light is that it concentrates its energy on a single wavelength. In the case of the SculpSure system, that wavelength is 1,060 nanometers, a specific energy that’s absorbed easily by adipose tissue, the “fat storage” mechanism of your body. Where the SculpSure energy is absorbed, the temperature of adipose tissue rises as light converts to heat.

When cells reach a temperature of about 5-10 degrees Celsius above normal body temperature, their structure is disrupted, and they’re naturally eliminated from the body over the next few weeks and months. These fat cells don’t regenerate unless you undergo a sudden and major weight gain.

What can I expect from a SculpSure treatment?

SculpSure is now cleared by the FDA to treat fat in six areas. These are:

  • Abdomen
  • Flanks, also called love handles
  • Back
  • Inner thighs
  • Outer thighs
  • Under the chin, also called the submental region

Which areas you choose for treatment depend on your own body contour goals. The applicators feel cool to the touch, to help keep your skin comfortable as the adipose tissue warms. You’ll feel deep warmth and perhaps a tingling sensation. There are rarely side effects to SculpSure treatment, but if there are, it’s typically an effect similar to mild sunburn that usually fades in a few hours, since there’s no ultraviolet component in the SculpSure laser.

After the 25-minute treatment is complete, you’re ready to go, since there’s no post-treatment recovery time. Your body begins to work on the breakdown of disrupted fat immediately, but it generally takes up to 12 weeks to see the full effect of a treatment. Some patients may require more than one treatment to attain their body contour goals.

How many treatments do I need?

The number depends on the areas you want to treat. During your initial consultation, the Doctor reviews your goals and develops a treatment plan and timeline to achieve maximum results. In some cases, only one session is needed, but most patients are happiest with two to three treatments to ensure the best possible outcome.

Each SculpSure treatment session takes only about 25 minutes, and there's no downtime associated with the procedure, which means you can return to your daily activities directly afterward.

When will I see results?

Results after your SculpSure treatments are gradual as your body works to process and eliminate your destroyed fat cells. Most patients begin to see results after six weeks, with full results at 12 weeks.
