Infertility Q & A

I've been trying to get pregnant, and haven't been able to. Am I infertile?

Not necessarily. Infertility is defined as trying to get pregnant for at least 12 consecutive months with no success. If you're having difficulty becoming pregnant and you're concerned, having an evaluation is the best way to put those worries to rest and to decide if you need to take additional steps to help you become pregnant.

What infertility services does Dr. Silver offer?

Dr. Silver offers several different types of services, depending on each patient's unique needs, including:

  • hormone evaluation

  • semen analysis

  • ultrasound

  • evaluation of factors contributing to multiple miscarriages

  • preconception counseling to minimize risk factors

  • genetic testing and counseling referral

  • intrauterine insemination (IUI)

What are the most common causes of infertility?

About 10 percent of all couples in the U.S. are infertile. For women, the most common causes include:

  • older age

  • uterine fibroids

  • uterine polyps

  • structural abnormalities in the uterus

  • endometriosis, a condition that occurs when uterine tissue grows outside the uterus

  • excessive production of mucus that can impair sperm motility

Dr. Silver uses state-of-the-art techniques and technology to help pinpoint the cause of your infertility and to develop a plan to increase your chances of becoming pregnant.

How can infertility be treated?

The type of treatment will depend on the underlying cause of your infertility. Dr. Silver can recommend the treatment that's most appropriate for your needs and recommend a specialist when necessary.

Does IUI increase the risk of multiple births?

IUI can be used with or without fertility drugs. When used with fertility drugs (called stimulated IUI), your risk of multiple births is much higher than when IUI is used alone because fertility drugs increase the number of eggs that are released.
