Dr. Silver offers a wide array of family planning options, including:

  • preconception counseling

  • birth control counseling

  • safe and confidential elective termination options, including adoption alternatives

  • screening and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases

How can I tell which type of birth control is best for me?

Birth control is a highly personal choice, and with so many options, it can be difficult to decide which one is best for your needs. For many women, the best type of birth control is the one they feel most confident using. Dr. Silver will review different types of birth control so you find a product that you're most comfortable with. Some of the most popular options include:

  • intrauterine devices (IUDs) like Mirena and Paragard

  • Depoprovera injections

  • Nuvaring

  • Implanon

  • Tubal and Essure sterilizations

  • Oral contraceptives and condoms

What is preconception counseling?

Preconception counseling serves several purposes, all aimed at ensuring you have a healthy pregnancy. First, it helps identify any potential medical conditions that could result in a high-risk pregnancy. Second, it provides guidance and advice for ensuring you're as healthy as possible before becoming pregnant – after all, the healthier you are, the healthier your baby will be. And finally, it provides a confidential environment for asking questions and talking about your concerns about pregnancy, parenthood and your health in general. During preconception counseling, you'll work with Dr. Silver to establish a regimen that can help you be as healthy as possible before your baby is conceived, including diet and exercise, smoking cessation, and health screening. In some cases, genetic testing may also be advised.

How can the Doctor help with family planning?

Family planning has many aspects, and the Doctor can help with all of them. Her services include:

  • Counseling and support for women trying to conceive
  • Birth control support and counseling
  • Information about alternatives, including legal pregnancy termination and adoption
  • Support for women planning adoption, including connecting patients with an attorney

What are available birth control options?

Your birth control method is entirely up to you, and a number of good options are available. Birth control methods include:

Oral contraceptives

Birth control pills use daily doses of estrogen or progestin to stop egg release and, in some cases to force, the shedding of extra uterine lining. Oral contraceptives taken in the optimal way — every day at the same time — have an effectiveness rate of 99.7% or higher.

Intrauterine devices

IUDs are available in two general types, copper and hormonal. Copper IUDs last up to 12 years. Hormonal IUDs last three to six years, depending on the type. IUDs are a very effective form of contraception, with effectiveness rates of more than 99%.

Depo-Provera® injections

Depo-Provera uses progestin to suppress ovulation. You must receive injections every three months. With a consistent injection schedule, the effectiveness rate is over 99%.

Nexplanon is an implant that steadily delivers the hormone etonogestrel into the bloodstream for up to three years of birth control. The effectiveness rate is over 99%.

There are several other options available, including long-term birth control with Essure® or tubal sterilization.

How does pre-conception counseling work?

Counseling with the doctor is extremely helpful when you're ready to conceive. During the counseling process, the doctor can identify potential issues that could cause problems in conceiving or in carrying a healthy pregnancy. If these issues are identified and treated early, it can help you have a much healthier and happier pregnancy.

Counseling is also a great time for you to ask questions about conception, pregnancy testing, and pregnancy in general. Make an appointment online or call anytime for family planning help.
